The Health Insurance Marketplace, also called (health insurance exchange) or (Obamacare), was launched on October 1, 2013, as an enrollment platform to help individuals and families sign up for health insurance coverage.
The Health Insurance Marketplace is a good resource for individuals who DO NOT have health insurance through a job, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or another source that provides "Qualified Coverage".
Depending on your annual income, family size, and other factors, you may receive a subsidy to reduce the cost of your monthly health insurance premium by applying and enrolling through the Marketplace.
Although the Health Insurance Marketplace is well intended, it has been highly criticized in the media, with many individuals finding it very difficult to navigate an online application on healthcare.gov. Applications can take up to an hour to complete, and simple errors could leave you without a subsidy or enrollment start date you deserve. In addition, telephone hold times easily range from 30 minutes to well over an hour to speak to a representative.
